We used to give out addresses when we were kids at a children’s camp or spa, so that new friends could send us a letter and tell us what was new in their lives. The home address still finds its use in many families today, even for Christmas and Easter wishes. But what if we add a mailing address, a delivery address or a contact address to the home address? Do you know the difference between them and which one is used in which situations? To help you with this, we have prepared an overview of each type of address and a description of each.
Residential address
Your permanent address is where you theoretically live. In practice, however, this is not entirely true, as you may still have a permanent address with your parents, but have been living somewhere else for a few years in a rental property.
There are certain rights and obligations attached to a permanent home address; it is the person’s officially registered address. The permanent address is used for civil registration, health insurance and tax obligations, determines your affiliation to authorities and institutions and decides, among other things, which precinct you can vote in.
If you wish to change your permanent address, you must visit the municipality under which the municipality where your address is registered falls. When you change your permanent address, you must provide proof of ownership of the property or the owner’s agreement that you can establish a permanent residence in his or her property.
You must then notify other institutions such as banks, insurance companies, health insurance, social security or your employer of this change. If you do not report the change, you run the risk of legal consequences, such as invalid delivery of important documents.

Correspondence address
Do you want your mail not to come directly to your home? That’s exactly what a mailing address is for. This is an address where you would like to receive mail, but you do not have to have a permanent address. Typically, people use it when, for example, they are abroad for a long period of time or are renting, so their mailing address is different from the officially registered one.
This type of address is therefore suitable, for example, for students studying away from home or for employees working in another city. It is also common to use a correspondence address in business relationships where a company wishes to receive invoices or other business documentation at an address other than the registered office.
Mailing address and change of mailing address
The delivery address is the one you designate as the address where you wish to receive parcels and documents. It may be different from your permanent home address and from your correspondence address. If you wish to have service made to a different address from the one you have been using, you must make this change of service address, for example, at the post office, via a data box or by notifying the competent authority.
From a legal point of view, the delivery address is important mainly for the receipt of official documents. For example, if a person is abroad and does not notify the authorities of a change of service address, the authorities may serve important legal documents on him or her at the wrong address. This can have serious consequences, for example, a court decision may be made in the person’s absence because he or she will not be aware of it.

Contact address
A contact address is one at which an individual or company can be contacted. The contact address may be the same as the delivery address and the mailing address, but it does not have to have the legal weight of a permanent address.
People often provide a contact address in contracts, applications or registration forms, for example. Here it is more than important to make sure that this address is up to date, because once you have given an incorrect contact address, you may again miss out on important information.
Billing address
The billing address is shown on invoices and tax documents. The billing address usually corresponds to the registered office or permanent residence of the business. If the billing address is different from the delivery address, it must be entered correctly in the business documentation.
The question “what is the billing address” usually arises when, for example, you order a package from an online shop and fill in the order. The billing address is usually entered separately from the delivery address. You can specify your permanent address as the billing address, but the delivery address is the place where you actually live, work, etc. In the case of companies, it is important to make sure that the billing address corresponds to the details that the company has registered in the commercial register.

Virtual address
Virtual addresses are most often used by legal entities as their registered office. This is because it can be used for corporate purposes without having a physical presence at the location. A virtual address is commonly used for registration in the commercial register, where the entrepreneur does not need his own premises.
Virtual addresses have become a commodity that works as a paid service for entrepreneurs who do not need their physical office, but still want to be based in a representative location. A typical example of the use of a virtual address: an entrepreneur wants to have a company headquarters in Prague, but actually works from Litoměřice. What is important, however, is that entrepreneurs make sure that itis actually possible to receive mail at the virtual address, otherwise there could be problems with the delivery of official documents.
A little law on service and address changes
- Service of legal documents is made to the delivery address or the permanent address of the residence.
- If the address is incorrect, there is a fiction of service, which means that documents are deemed to have been served even if the addressee has not physically received them.
- Any change of address must be notified to the competent authorities to avoid complications.
- In the case of entrepreneurs, it is important to have the company’s registered office correctly entered in the commercial register, otherwise it may be considered invalid.
Practical tips for the correct handling of addresses
Check your detailsregularly and make sure all your important addresses are always up to date. Always notify changes of address in good time. If you move, inform not only the authorities but also banks, employers and other important institutions. Also make sure that mail can be collected at the address – especially for virtual addresses and mailing addresses, you need to make sure that delivery people can actually find a marked box where they can leave documents for you. If you are a business, make sure your business address is listed correctly everywhere. If you get it wrong in the Companies House, you run the risk of legal complications.
