On 15 April 2026, the Chamber of Deputies again approved an amendment to the National Holidays Act, which adds a new important day to the calendar – Czech Flag Day. After the Senate’s rejection of the amendment, the proposal is heading to the President for signature.
The amendment amends Act No. 245/2000 Coll., on public holidays, only in the part on important days. The new date is to include 30 March, a date which the proposal links to the adoption of the Czechoslovak flag in 1920. From a legal point of view, it is important that this is not a public holiday or a day of rest, but just another important day in the calendar.
The practical impact of the amendment will thus be largely symbolic. Significant days do not in themselves give rise to a right to time off work or any other special regime. Although the proposal originally envisaged immediate effect, so that the new day could be observed as early as 30 March 2026, since the House of Commons did not finally approve the law until 15 April, the new significant day may not be seen in practice for the first time until the next date, 30 March 2027, if the amendment is signed and promulgated in the meantime.
