The self-employed will not return to the lower social insurance rates for the time being. At its meeting on 6 May 2026, the Senate rejected by a narrow majority an amendment to the law that would have reversed this year’s increase in contributions and set the parameters at the level in force in the previous year. For tradesmen and craftsmen, this means that the increased assessment base, which came into effect in January 2026, remains in effect

The main argument for rejecting the draft was to protect the stability of the state budget and to comply with the rules of budgetary responsibility. Senators who opposed the cuts pointed to the significant negative impact that the loss of these revenues would have on the pension account. According to the upper house, a return to lower rates in the current economic situation would pose a disproportionate risk to public finances and would undermine the design of previously approved consolidation measures.

The opposition and supporters of the amendment, on the other hand, argued that it would impose an unreasonable financial and administrative burden on small businesses, which could lead to a reduction in the number of trades. However, since the Senate exercised its right to reject the bill, the legislative process in this form is over. Currently, nothing has changed in the legal level and self-employed persons are still obliged to pay social security contributions calculated according to the higher assessment base approved in the last tax changes.
