• to prove your marital status abroad,
• when applying for residency, visas, or recognition of family relationships in another country.

In practice, we often see newlyweds file their marriage certificate away with their wedding documents and only start looking for it when they have a short deadline to renew their documents or are dealing with an agency abroad. That’s why it’s a good idea to take stock right after the wedding of where the original is stored and whether you’ll also need a certified copy or a multilingual form.

How and Where to Obtain Your Marriage Certificate After the Wedding

The marriage certificate is issued by the registry office with jurisdiction over the municipality where you were married. Therefore, if you have your wedding at a castle or another ceremonial venue, for example, it is not your permanent residence that matters, but the place where the marriage took place.

After the marriage is solemnized, the registry office will make an entry in the marriage register and issue the original marriage certificate. The office may mail the original to an authorized person or issue it in person upon presentation of a valid ID. There is no administrative fee for issuing the first marriage certificate. If you are picking up the marriage certificate in person, please bring a valid ID card or passport. If another person is picking up the document, they will generally need a power of attorney with an officially certified signature.

Typical scenario: Newlyweds get married on a Saturday outside their place of residence. The marriage certificate will not be available immediately at the ceremony. The Ministry of the Interior explains that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs affixes the apostille only after the document has been certified by the relevant municipal authority with extended powers or the regional authority. In the case of superlegalization, certification by Czech authorities is followed by certification by the diplomatic mission of the foreign state.
