From the beginning of 2026, there is a change in the management of the civil service. Coordination in this area is now handled by the Government Office, where the Civil Service Section is being transferred from the Ministry of the Interior. The change is the result of an amendment to the Civil Service Act, which came into force on 1 January.

The transfer of the section is primarily organisational in nature and aims to strengthen the supra-ministerial coordination of the civil service. According to the Ministry of the Interior, the centralisation of personnel policy management under the Office of the Government is intended to contribute toa more uniform approach across central authorities and is in line with models used in some European countries. The change was also confirmed by the government as part of this year’s systemisation.

However, there is no change in the powers or status of civil servants. The remit of the Civil Service Section remains unchanged, as do the roles of the Chief Secretary of State, the Director of Personnel and other staff. The changes thus do not affect the performance of the civil service or the working conditions of officials, but only the organisation and management of the civil service.
