Maternity leave and its benefits are intended to allow the mother to concentrate on looking after herself and her child, so you cannot take the benefit and continue working. However, is it possible to earn extra money?

You must not do the same job as before maternity leave

If you don’t want to lose your maternity pay, be careful when working for your current employer. You can only contract with them for a different job. For example, an accountant will be able to take on a contract for ‘administrative work’ but must not do the work of an accountant again, even if it is part-time.

Consent for another company

You can take the same job with another employer, but the original employer must give you written consent. However, this restriction does not apply to scientific, teaching, journalistic, literary or artistic activities.

Entrepreneurship on maternity leave

If you were running a business and paying for your health insurance before you went on maternity leave, you cannot continue to run the business personally. The only possible solution is to find an employee.

However, if the business was only a sideline to employment, maternity leave will not affect this and so you can continue it without any restrictions.

Parental leave

There are far fewer restrictions on parental leave. You can carry on any gainful activity quite freely. You can join your previous employer or find other employment.

You don’t have to give notice to quit the job you are holding and plan to return to after your parental leave.

The only thing you need to make sure you don’t lose your parental allowance is proper supervision of your child. Just make arrangements with the grandparents, arrange a nanny or use a day nursery. However, children under the age of two can spend a maximum of 46 hours a month in a nursery or kindergarten.
