EET is here! Read the most important information that this obligation brings to sole traders, entrepreneurs and freelancers.

1. What is EET?

Electronic sales registration (abbreviated EET) is a system of recording all payments that take place between the customer and the trader. The whole system works in such a way that the entrepreneur sends information about the payment to the tax administration by means of a data message and a unique code is returned to the entrepreneur, which is printed on the customer’s receipt.

The state thus receives information about every payment that takes place. The aim is to eliminate so-called “black” and thus untaxed payments and to raise more funds for the state budget.

2. Who is affected by the EET?

EET affects basically all traders, small and other entrepreneurs who sell to end customers. It affects accommodation, catering and hospitality services, wholesale and retail trade (shops, kiosks, repair shops) and last but not least doctors, lawyers, accountants, hairdressers, masseurs, etc. It will also affect entrepreneurs in agriculture, transport and various craft activities.

The law has been in force since March 2016, but it will take effect gradually depending on the area of business.

From approximately 1 December 2016, the EET obligations will apply to accommodation, catering and hospitality services. From 1 March 2017, the EET will apply to retail and wholesale trade, and from 1 March 2018, other business sectors will join in, with the exception of certain craft and manufacturing activities, for which the EET will apply from 1 June 2018.

4. What is needed to comply?

Entrepreneurs, sole traders or freelancers affected by EET must register with the relevant tax office. There, they will be issued with a special certificate to use as part of the technology for exchanging data with the tax authorities.

They will then need an internet connection and the purchase of technology to enable data exchange with the tax authorities, including a printer.
