The dates of the regional, senate and local elections have been fixed. They will always be held at the end of the first week of October of the respective year. The legislator is thus responding to the previous practice, when elections were threatened to be postponed to the summer months, which could have negatively affected voter turnout.
The change also affects voting in Senate elections. Voters will no longer receive a set of separate ballot papers for individual candidates, but one common ballot paper with a list of candidates on which they mark their favourite. The measure is intended to simplify the voting process while reducing administrative and printing costs.
The amendment also takes into account future presidential elections. From the next election of the head of state in 2028, it will also be possible to collect citizens’ signatures in support of a candidacy electronically. At the same time, there is a new restriction that each deputy or senator can only support one presidential candidate with his or her signature.
