Czech healthcare has entered a new phase of digitalization. Since January 2026, the Patient Portal has been in operation, allowing people to access selected health records without the need for paper documents. Together with the Doctor’s Portal and the enhanced functions of the EZCard application, the system is intended to gradually reduce administration and simplify the flow of information between patients and healthcare professionals.
Since the beginning of the year, the National e-Health Portal has been in operation, which includes the Patient Portal. It serves as a central signpost to digital health services and gradually offers access to discharge reports, electronic claims and other health information. Logging in is done through a national identity and the system distinguishes whether the user is logging in as a patient, a doctor or an ordinary citizen.
At the same time, a pilot of electronic claims has been launched, which can be issued by physicians, for example, for imaging, consular or physiotherapy examinations. Their use is not yet compulsory, and a paper form is still possible. Electronic documentation is also reflected in the EZCard mobile app, which now displays other health data in addition to vaccinations and preventive check-ups.
The Ministry of Health envisages that digitisation will be gradual and that digital and paper systems will continue to operate in parallel for several years. The further development of the Patient Portal, including wider sharing of health records and greater integration with outpatient and hospital systems, will depend on the technical readiness of providers as well as on securing long-term funding for operation.
