The European Union has taken the data under the magnifying glass. The regulation known as the Data Act is now officially in place – as of 12 September 2025, it changes the way companies, institutions and individuals handle data. Smart device users now have a clearer right to access their data. And that’s not all.
As of September 2025, the European Data Regulation (Data Act) came into force, which affects everyone who uses digital technology – that means virtually all of us. The aim is to set clear and fair rules for access to data generated by, for example, smart appliances, vehicles or cloud services. And what is essential? This data will no longer be the exclusive domain of manufacturers or providers – now users themselves have a right to it.
The regulation was approved in December 2023 and came into force on 11 January 2024, but it starts to apply in real terms on 12 September 2025. From that date, companies are obliged to allow access to the data generated by their users, including in machine-readable form. It must also be possible to share this data with a third party – for example, if you want to switch to another provider or service.
For ordinary citizens, this means more control over their own data, more transparent services and easier switching between providers. Businesses, on the other hand, need to prepare for new obligations and possible technical adjustments to their systems. But one thing is certain – the Data Act brings a fundamental change in who has control over data. And this time it is the user.
