Pavel Zeman, former Chief State Prosecutor, has been appointed European Public Prosecutor for the Czech Republic by the Council of the European Union. His six-year mandate will start in July. The European Public Prosecutor’s Office (EPPO) focuses on investigating crimes against the financial interests of the European Union.
The EU Council decided on Zeman’s appointment on Wednesday. In his new role, Zeman will work within the European Public Prosecutor’s Office (EPPO), which is based in Luxembourg and oversees investigations into cases of subsidy fraud, corruption and cross-border tax offences affecting the EU budget. The European Public Prosecutor is a member of the EPPO’s College and contributes to the strategic management of the office.
Zeman has long experience of European judicial cooperation. Since last March, he has served as the Czech national member at Eurojust in The Hague, where he was appointed for a five-year term. He previously held the position of Chief Prosecutor and was the first Czech national member of Eurojust after the Czech Republic joined the EU. He applied for the post of European Public Prosecutor together with other candidates; the Czech selection committee found him to be the most suitable candidate.
