As of 1 July 2025, a new institution – the Children’s Ombudsman – began operating in the Czech Republic. Its task is to protect and promote children’s rights both in individual cases and at a systemic level. The agenda of the Children’s Ombudsman is provided by the Ombudsman’s Office in Brno, and until the first representative is elected by the Chamber of Deputies, the Deputy Ombudsman Vít Alexander Schorm exercises his powers.
Under the law, the Children’s Ombudsman has the power to investigate children’s complaints, monitor compliance with children’s rights, intervene in selected court proceedings, conduct research, and mediate children’s views to public institutions. The Act also provides for the establishment of a children’s advisory body. The function is designed to be independent and complement the work of the existing Ombudsman.
The election of a full Children’s Ombudsman will take place in the House of Commons at a later date, and the term of office will be six years. The candidate must be nominated by the President, the Senate or the universities. The candidate must have, among other things, a law degree and at least five years of experience in protecting children’s rights.
