On the proposal of Justice Minister Eva Decroix, the Cabinet approved three conceptual materials that determine the direction of Czech criminal policy, the prison system and the Probation and Mediation Service until 2035.

On 29 October, the Government approved three long-term strategies of the Ministry of Justice – the Pillars of Criminal Policy document, the Concept for the Development of the Prison System until 2035 and the Concept for the Development of Probation and Mediation until 2035. These materials define the main objectives and priorities for each area and respond to current problems such as overcrowded prisons, the need for modernisation or staff shortages.

The pillars of penal policy are based on four key areas – working with offenders, supporting victims, an effective justice system and a meaningful sanctions policy. The document is the result of interdisciplinary collaboration between experts, the non-profit sector and state institutions.

The Prison Development Concept focuses on improving prison conditions, staff stability and technological modernisation. The strategy for the development of probation and mediation aims primarily at reducing the workload of staff, securing funding and developing restorative justice. All the documents pursue the common goal of increasing the efficiency of the criminal justice system and adapting it to current societal needs.
