The government has endorsed a plan to establish the Commission for the Review of Sudden Child Deaths by law. Its task will be to retrospectively analyze cases in which a child has died and determine whether there was a failure on the part of institutions or a lack of cooperation among them.
A similar commission already operates within the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs, but its current status is merely ad hoc, and it lacks sufficiently strong authority or automatic access to all necessary documentation. The Children’s Ombudsman has therefore recommended that it be enshrined directly in law. The Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs is now tasked with drafting the specific provisions of the new legislation.
The purpose of the commission is not to identify individual culprits, butto uncover systemic problems, for example, in the procedures of the Social and Legal Protection of Children Authority (OSPOD), the police, the courts, healthcare providers, or other institutions. However, this is not yet an approved law or a finalized bill, but merely an initiative whose preparation the government has supported.
