At the end of August, the Cabinet approved a draft amendment to the Consumer Protection Act to prevent greenwashing – misleading claims about the environmental friendliness of products and services. The new rules are intended to promote fair information to consumers and more sustainable consumption.
The amendment stipulates that companies will not be allowed to use environmental labels and slogans without supporting them with verifiable data. Any claims of environmental friendliness will have to be true and substantiated so that consumers are not misled by false “eco” labels.
The proposal also includes the promotion of the reparability and durability of products, thus targeting not only marketing practices but also the actual extension of the lifetime of goods and the reduction of waste. The amendment follows European efforts to regulate greenwashing, in particular the forthcoming European Commission directive on environmental claims.
If the amendment goes through the legislative process and comes into force, companies will have to back up their green promises with concrete evidence. This will give consumers greater confidence that the products they purchase actually meet the declared characteristics and are not just a marketing strategy.
