From 1 January 2026, an amendment to the law known as the lex Anička will come into force, strengthening the position of victims of crime and bringing changes in the field of justice. The amendment approved by the Senate increases financial assistance to victims, introduces its automatic valorisation and extends the circle of beneficiaries to include the spouse of the deceased victim. It also provides greater support for non-profit organisations that provide assistance to victims.

Victims of sexual violence will now be classified as particularly vulnerable. The changes also affect the training of judges – they will draw up individual training plans each year and the Judicial Academy will provide them with methodological support. The statute of limitations for disciplinary offences committed by judges and prosecutors will also be extended from three to five years.

The name lex Anička refers to a well-publicised case in which the courts imposed a suspended sentence on a man convicted of repeatedly raping his underage stepdaughter. The amendmentresponds to calls for better protection of child victims and a fairer approach to sexual offences by the judiciary.
