The government approved an amendment to media laws today that would eliminate television and radio license fees. Czech Television and Czech Radio are set to be funded directly from the state budget starting in 2027.
Under the proposal, Czech Television is to receive 5.74 billion crowns from the state budget, and Czech Radio 2.065 billion crowns. The government states that the aim of the change is to reduce the financial burden on households and businesses while establishing stable and predictable funding for public service media. The approved proposal follows an earlier plan by Culture Minister Ota Klempíř, which the government abandoned after receiving feedback; it now intends to change the funding of public media by amending existing regulations. The Minister of Culture stated that the proposed amounts are based on the level of funding prior to the last fee increase and that a lower budget is intended to lead to greater efficiency.
The proposal has been criticized by the opposition, the leadership of both media outlets, and some experts. According to critics, funding directly from the state budget could increase the dependence of Czech Television and Czech Radio on the current political leadership and weaken their independence. Reservations have also been raised regarding the proposed amounts, which are lower than current revenue from fees. Employees of the public media have declared a strike alert in response to the planned changes.
