The Chamber of Deputies supported the government’s proposal to reintroduce electronic sales registration in the first reading. The new system is to be operational from next year and, according to the government, is to be simpler than the original registration.
The government hopes that the return of the EET will result in higher tax collection and a more level business environment. According to Finance Minister Alena Schillerová, the new system is expected to bring more than CZK 14 billion a year to the public budgets, while at the same time not being as administratively demanding as the previous form of registration. The proposal also envisages exemptions for the smallest entrepreneurs and that entrepreneurs will not have to print receipts.
The opposition questions the benefits of the proposal. Some MPs argue that the government has not presented a sufficiently convincing analysis of the expected return and that registration may impose an additional administrative burden, especially on smaller businesses. Criticism also concerns the inclusion of non-cash payments, which, according to opponents of the proposal, are traceable even without the EET. Other objections are directed at the fact that, in addition to the registration itself, the proposal also includes related tax changes, such as a reduction in VAT on soft drinks in restaurants.
