At its meeting on 26 March 2025, the Government of the Czech Republic approved a regulation defining the territorial districts of the embassies for the first postal vote of Czech citizens abroad. This measure will allow compatriots to vote for the Chamber of Deputies by post as early as autumn 2025, except in countries where postal connections are unreliable.
In nine countries, correspondence choice will not be possible due to unreliable postal services. These countries are Afghanistan, Yemen, North Korea (DPRK), Libya, Palestine, Haiti, Somalia, Western Sahara and now the Democratic Republic of Congo. Czech citizens in these countries will have to vote in person at designated embassies. For example, voters from Afghanistan will be able to vote at the embassy in Islamabad, Pakistan
The regulation prepared by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will come into force on 1 April 2025, which will allow for the early technical implementation of postal voting. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs estimates that there are approximately 600 000 Czech citizens living abroad, and the actual turnout for the next elections is estimated at 80 000 people.
Czech citizens residing abroad for a long period of time who are registered in the special voters’ list at the competent embassy and who apply for postal voting in time will be able to use this new voting option. This step is in line with long-standing efforts to facilitate voter participation for Czech citizens living abroad
