I paid for a year’s service, but after a year I was extended without notice and charged another payment. Is there any way I can cancel or refund?

Automatic subscription renewals are common for online services (streaming platforms, apps, antiviruses, language courses, etc.). As a consumer, you have the right to know exactly what you are signing up for when you enter into a contract.

You need to be clearly informed at the time of ordering – The entrepreneur is legally obliged to inform you in advance that the contract is automatically extended. If this was not clearly stated in the terms and conditions or order confirmation, you can claim cancellation of the extension and a refund.
The obligation to send notice before renewal is not expressly in the law, but for contracts of longer duration (e.g. annual) this is considered fair practice.

What to do?

Check the terms of service – did they explicitly and clearly state that the subscription will automatically renew?
If not, write to customer support and request cancellation and refund. Refer to Section 1811 et seq. of the Civil Code (duty to inform) or the right to withdraw from the distance contract.
If the trader does not meet your needs, file a complaint with the Czech Trade Inspectorate for a Czech trader, or use the European Consumer Centre (ECC) for foreign services (e.g. Netflix, Duolingo, antivirus).
