New rules for school canteens will apply from 1 September 2025. The changes to the School Food Ordinance are intended to bring more varied and healthier menus that are more in line with current nutritional recommendations. Schools have a year to prepare for the new measures.

The changes focus mainly on the quality of the ingredients used and the composition of the meals. The proportion of whole grains, vegetables and other fresh ingredients is to be increased, while salt, added sugar and highly processed foods are to be reduced. The aim is to offer children a balanced and nutritious diet.

The Ministry of Health, together with the National Institute of Health, has prepared methodological support to ensure a smooth transition. School canteens have manuals, webinars and consultations with experts. Changes also concern the rules for children who, for various reasons, use their own food – they will now be allowed to eat it on the premises.
