In the first reading, the Chamber of Deputies approved the government’s amendment to the Road Traffic Act, which is intended to eliminate automatic price increases for highway toll stickers starting in 2027. The bill will now be reviewed by the Economic Committee.
According to the draft bill, highway toll sticker prices would remain at this year’s levels in 2027. An annual sticker would thus continue to cost 2,570 crowns, a 30-day sticker 480 crowns, a 10-day sticker 300 crowns, and a one-day sticker 230 crowns. The amendment repeals the indexation mechanism, under which prices are adjusted based on inflation and the year-over-year increase in the length of the highway network. Discounts for selected vehicles with alternative powertrains—such as electric cars, hydrogen vehicles, plug-in hybrids, and CNG- and LNG-powered cars—are also set to remain in place.
The government justifies the proposal by citing a reduction in the financial burden on drivers and the fact that the backbone of the highway network is still under construction. Transportation Minister Ivan Bednárik stated that any future price increases should be subject to political debate rather than occurring automatically. The opposition criticizes the proposal as a fiscally irresponsible move and points out that, according to the explanatory memorandum, the State Transport Infrastructure Fund will lose hundreds of millions of crowns over the next two years. In subsequent stages of deliberation, a change to the one-day vignette may also be considered, so that it remains valid for 24 hours from the time of purchase, rather than only until midnight on the day of purchase.
