The government has approved a proposal from the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs that would change the amount of unemployment benefits and retraining benefits starting in 2027. In the first few months after losing their jobs, people would receive less than under the current rules, and the maximum possible benefit amount would also be reduced.
According to the proposal approved by the government on August 31, unemployment benefits for people with prior income will amount to 65% of their average net earnings or assessment base during the first two months. At the same time, the maximum benefit amount is set to drop to 60% of the average wage. According to the proposal, the duration of the benefit period will remain unchanged.
The government aims to partially reverse previous changes that increased benefits during the first months of unemployment. According to the cabinet’s estimate, the new adjustments could save the state approximately 4.5 to 5 billion crowns per year. However, this is currently only a proposal approved by the government, which must still pass through Parliament. If the legislative process is completed, the changes should take effect on January 1, 2027.
